ODOT Grant Could Be Available For Esplanade
But planning work must be done quickly.
Port and City staffs have a daunting task in their hands as they try to flesh out the vision of Hood River Mayor Arthur Babitz and Port of Hood River Commission President Jon Davies of an esplanade on the western side of the Nichols Boat Basin. Port Executive Director Michael McElwee says there is an opportunity to receive a one-point-two million dollar grant from the Oregon Department of Transportation for a pedestrian-bicycle trail on the west side of the basin, but they have to get an application in by December. He says the challenge will be to develop a process to bring in the public, address technical issues, and develop a concept plan in a short amount of time. McElwee thinks it can be done, but it will take a significant effort and has to begin immediately.
