Urban Renewal Gives Staff Go-Ahead To Look At Esplanade
City and Port staffs will look at concept.
Hood River Urban Renewal Agency board members gave their blessing to having City and Port staffs begin to research what has to happen to move ahead with an esplanade project on the west side of the Nichols Boat Basin. Mayor Arthur Babitz and Port Commission President Jon Davies presented their idea to the Urban Renewal panel, one week after Port Commissioners gave a similar go-ahead to explore the concept. Now it goes into the hands of Port Executive Director Michael McElwee and City Manager Bob Francis. But McElwee notes they need a resolution of the disagreement over a proposed hotel at the south end of the basin between Naito Development and Friends of the Waterfront. Both Babitz and Davies have consistently said the hotel is a key component of funding the esplanade development.
