Urban Renewal Next Stop For Esplanade
Meeting October 9 at 6 p.m. at Hood River City Hall.
The next stop for the idea by Port of Hood River Commission Chair Jon Davies and Hood River Mayor Arthur Babitz to develop an esplanade along the west side of Nichols Boat Basin instead of the cable park proposed by Naito Development is the Urban Renewal Board. That's a key stop, as a big part of the funding would come by leveraging tax revenues from development in the Waterfront Urban Renewal District. Babitz says that district's tax base will be increasing to 30 to 35 million dollars in the next year. Babitz does point out there is existing debt for the district, but he also says construction of a proposed hotel at the south end of the basin would bring a significant increase to the tax base. Both Babitz and Davies have said development of the hotel is crucial to their plan. The Urban Renewal panel meets as part of the Hood River City Council meeting Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. in City Hall.
